Limescale inhibitors and scale reducers
A compact in-line device that changes how hardness minerals behave so they do not stick as scale, without removing them. Far cheaper and simpler than a softener.
A scale inhibitor does not soften water. The calcium and magnesium are still there when it comes out of the tap. What the device does is alter the way those minerals crystallise, so that instead of forming hard scale bonded to the inside of your boiler's heat exchanger, they stay suspended and pass through.
The common types are phosphate dosing cartridges, which release a tiny controlled amount of food-grade polyphosphate, and physical or electrolytic conditioners that work without any consumable. Both fit in-line on the cold supply, usually immediately before the boiler.
The honest position on effectiveness: phosphate dosing has a long track record and is widely specified by boiler manufacturers, and many require some form of scale protection in hard water areas to keep the warranty valid. Claims made for some magnetic and electronic conditioners are less well supported by independent testing than their marketing suggests. Where a product's evidence is thin, this site says so.

A straightforward in-line cut into the cold feed at the boiler, with isolation valves either side. Well within reach of a confident DIYer — but if a heating engineer is coming anyway, have them fit it and note it on the paperwork.
