How we keep it from influencing the advice

The recommendation engine on this site is driven by water hardness and the reader's stated problem, not by commission. The clearest evidence of that is what it does in soft water areas: it tells readers in Scotland, Wales, the North West and the South West not to buy a water softener — which is the highest-value product we could possibly link to.

It also tells readers that a scale inhibitor at a tenth of the price is the right answer whenever it is, and that some products' marketing claims are not well supported.

Prices
