Is hard water bad for your boiler?
Yes, in a hard water area, and this is the one hard-water effect that costs real money rather than being an inconvenience.
The mechanism is straightforward. Heating hard water drives dissolved calcium out of solution and it deposits on the hottest surface available — which in a combi boiler is the heat exchanger, the component whose entire job is transferring heat efficiently.
What scale does inside the boiler
Limescale is a good thermal insulator, which is exactly the wrong property in a heat exchanger. As it builds, the boiler has to run hotter and longer to deliver the same output. Efficiency falls, gas consumption rises, and components run at temperatures they were not designed to sit at continuously.
In a combi boiler the effect is concentrated, because the domestic hot water side heats water on demand rather than storing it — so all the hardness in every litre of hot water you draw passes across that plate exchanger.
The audible symptom is kettling: banging or rumbling from the boiler as water boils in scaled-up passages. By the time you can hear it, there is a substantial deposit.
Why manufacturers require scale protection
Many boiler manufacturers make scale protection a condition of the warranty in hard water areas — commonly where hardness exceeds around 200 mg/l CaCO₃, though the threshold and the accepted products vary by manufacturer.
This is not caution. It is a manufacturer declining to underwrite a failure mode caused by the water rather than by the boiler.
The practical consequence: if you are having a boiler installed in a hard water area, check what your specific manufacturer requires before the installation, not after. Fitting the right protection at the same time costs very little; retrofitting it after a warranty claim is refused costs a boiler.
What to fit
A scale inhibitor on the cold feed to the boiler is the standard answer and usually satisfies the warranty condition. Phosphate dosing cartridges have the strongest track record and the widest manufacturer acceptance. Cheap, compact, fitted in an hour, and often done as part of the boiler installation.
A water softener protects the boiler and everything else in the property. If you were considering one anyway, it makes the inhibitor redundant. If you were not, it is a much larger purchase to solve one problem.
Check what your manufacturer accepts. Some specify particular technologies or particular products. An inhibitor that does not meet their requirement protects the boiler but not the warranty, which rather misses the point.
If your boiler is already scaled
A heating engineer can chemically descale a boiler, and on a moderately affected unit it is worth doing. It is not a permanent fix on its own — without protection it will scale up again at the same rate.
Descale and then protect, in that order. Fitting an inhibitor to a boiler already full of scale does not remove what is there; inhibitors prevent new deposition, they do not dissolve existing scale.
